Posted on Mon, 22 Aug 2016
Question: Hello My name is XXXXXXX I recently got out of the hospital for pancreatitis, alcohol related, this is my third time. Everything was going okay and on the second day my kidneys, renal and pancreas where failing. MY potassium levels were very high and so were some other things. They were going to give me dialysis for my kidneys but everything improved. Of course my pancreas is damaged and is not producing insulin at the moment. When I was in the hospital, I was taking fast acting insulin and long lasting inslulin called levemir. When I was discharged he told me my a1c was at 6.9. They only give me levemir insisting I use 30 units daily. My blood sugar has spike from 260 upon relase tuesday, about 270s' wednesday and thursday and 400s' fridays, now 300s' today. What should I do?

Detailed Answer:
hi.
thanks for posting your query at HCM.

noticed your concerns for spiking blood sugar.

for now:
- if your suffering from diziness, dehydration, call emergency and visit hospital/clinic asap
- avoid activity altogether ; lie down and REST
- ingest water regularly to avoid dehydration
- you may take metformin ( glucophage) and/or a single dose of regular insulin ,if available to bring down the sugar level
- once sugar is below 200, kindly meet treating physician and discuss

long term advise:
- use pure virgin olive oil ( 2-3 table spoon) in the morning ( first thing in the morning) for one to two months ( i know patients whose blood sugar level improved a lot and they switched from insulin therapy to hypoglycemic agents like metformin within one month)

- source of carbohydrates maybe brown bread, legumes, fruits
- avoid commercial sugar, sweets, white bread, rice, pasta altogether
- eat meals rich in fiber
- reduce weight, if over weight

hope to answer your concern.
any further questions are welcomed.

wish you good and sound health.

What about my pancreas, the doctor told me there was necrosis in the pancreas. I was also told to let my pancreas heal so that it can produce some insulin and I can get away from being insulin dependent. Any suggestions on how I can begin to heal my body specifically my pancreas of course without the alcohol?

Detailed Answer:
hi.
thanks for getting back to me.

This was the third episode of pancreatitis experienced by you as indicated in your question. Recurrent pancreatitis is not a good sign and I hope all common and uncommon causes are properly investigated.
"Cause should be treated".

Secondly, pancreatitis would heal with passage of time - usually couple to few weeks.

Necrotic tissue in the pancreas should be investigated for pathogens and treated accordingly with antibiotics
and/or
Necrotic tissue maybe removed by a minimal invasive procedure.
( you may discuss with treating physician).

Furthermore, you are advised to:
ingest small meals at regular intervals,
strictly monitor blood sugar, as "high blood sugar prolongs healing".
reduce weight ( if over weight),
quit smoking ( if a smoker),
avoid spicy and junk food altogether.
Medication as per doctor prescription should be followed.

hope to answer your concern.
