What Causes Persistent Nausea And Stomach Cramps?

default
Posted on Thu, 7 Jul 2016
Question: Yesterday I woke up very nauseated. I didn't much eat much (1/2 cup of cottage cheese with bluberries). I felt nauseated as day went on, hydrating with flavored, fizzy water. Around three pm I had a cup of chicken salad & fresh fruit & the minute it hit my stomach I immediately had severe, burning stomach cramps that made me feel like I had to have a BM but only this thick, mucousy stuff came out. The pain continued & came in waves like contractions. I got up several times thinking I needed to have a BM but only little stuff would come out. As morning came the cramps to ease up but then I had violent diahrrea. Several more of those attacks & now I' left with extremely sore insides. During this episode or whatever it was, I felt dizzy & unsteady& headachy. I've had these in the past but never this severe or lasting all night. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Likely to be gastroenteritis

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Welcome
I have gone through your query and do understand your concern.
Based on the information I feel you have gastroenteritis.

Most cases of gastroenteritis are caused by viruses and requires only symptomatic treatment, consuming contaminated foods or drinks is another common cause.

I would suggest you to drink plenty of water or electrolyte solutions to prevent dehydration.
Add bland foods to your diet, such as bananas, toast, oatmeal and rice in small amounts every couple of hours. Avoid spicy food. Restrict meat for few days.
You can take curd which will be beneficial. Do not take over-the-counter anti-diarrheal medications. With this measures your symptoms should reduce.

You can take capsule omeprazole 20 mg before breakfast, empty stomach once daily for a week. Probiotics like sporolac or ecobion will be beneficial.

In case if your symptoms persist, I would have asked for stool routine examination and based on the report I would have decided on the next line of management (requirement of antibiotic)

Hope this helps
Take care.

Does it point to a virus more than contaminated food because there is such an immediate reaction? No one else who has eaten with me & ate the same food has had that reaction. Interestingly I have instinctively followed your advice about what to eat before your answer just because it hurts so much in my stomach to eat anything. Small amounts seem to be best & I've had trouble digesting meat for a few years; I don't eat beef anymore at all & stick mostly to chicken. I've had RA for 15 years & have wondered if digestive problems could come from that. My Rheumatologist doesn't want to discuss digestive problems; he says he only deals with arthritis. Is there a way to avoid this happening again? It was very severe this time. Thank you for your advice; it helps to have a name for it.

Brief Answer:
Pharmacological measures need to be followed

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXXXXX
Good to hear from you.
As said earlier it appears to be viral gastroenteritis. Apart from the non pharmacological measures you also have to follow pharmacological measures as suggested earlier. It should be helpful.
To avoid ititin the future, few suggestions that I would recommend to you is avoid spicy food, alcohol and smoking of you do. Avoid as much as possible outside foo, go for freshly prepared home made food. Add more fibres to your diet.
If it does not help you should go for stool routine examination. It will help us in diagnosing.
Hope this helps
Take care
