What Causes Persistent Indigestion, Dizziness And Heartburn?

Posted on Thu, 12 Nov 2015
Question: I have been suffering from severe indigestion and heartburn for a number of weeks. I was on a course of lanzol for a month but when I stopped it returned. I am now back on the tablets and while the issue has eased it is not gone. I have stabbing pains in my ribs at times and some dizziness. I have been to the doctor who prescribed the lanzol and I'm waiting on an ultrasound and endoscopy but they are some time away. Any ideas what this could be?

Brief Answer:
GERD seems to be the most probable diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

The most probable reason of your symptoms is a diseases called GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). Due to increased stomach acid production it appears in the esophagus and irritates it. Due to this irritation you get indigestion and heartburn.
PPIs medicines (like Lanzol) are in many cases the only effective way to control this issue. And in many cases it can not be completely cured.
As GERD very often appears with asthma disease. This can give cough, dizziness and some chest pains.
Gastroscopy is a good idea. It should be done to rule out H.Pylori infection and make sure there is no changes in the stomach. Sometimes it may detect hiatal hernia which can be causing such symptoms and be treated surgically.

In a meanwhile please try to avoid any fatty foods, spicy foods, coffee, alcohol, orange juices, chocolate.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Thanks. I don't suffer from asthma or have a cough just some dizziness and numbness at the rear of my head after light activity. When I rest this is not an issue. Should I be taking an antibiotic as well as the lanzol?

Heart can cause dizziness.

Dizziness after physical activity can be a sign of heart problem. Therefore you should consult cardiologist with it. Its hard to tell if the antibiotic will help not being able to examine you. So please consult your doctor.
