What Causes Persistent Fever In Child Despite Giving Pyrigesic Drops?

default
Posted on Tue, 25 Aug 2015
Question: Baby age - 11 months
Sex – Male
Weight - 10.5 kg

First we recorded 101 fever for my son, we first gave Pyrigesic drop twice, 2 ml each time in a span of 6 hours.
Fever was still there, then we spoke with the doctor over the phone and he recommended to continue with Pyrigesic drop XXXXXXX limit 5 times in a span of 24 hours.

In case of high fever Ibugesic if Ibugesic is not available then Ibugesic plus. We bought Ibugesic plus as only Ibugesic was not available.

Fever was still there and it came up to 102+ so we gave Ibugesic plus 3.5 ml. Temperature dropped after couple of hour and it then it was hovering between 99.00 to 101.05
Now I am unable to reach by doctor over the phone his voice is breaking and we are unable to communicate.

Last 36 hours history

Hour 1 . Pyrigesic drop 1 ML > Tem - 101
Hour 3 . Pyrigesic drop 1 ML > Tem – not recorded by fever was present
Hour 9 . Ibugesic plus 3.5 ML > Tem – 102.05
Hour 13. Pyrigesic drop 2 ML > Tem – 99
Hour 23. Pyrigesic drop 2 ML > Tem – 100
Hour 27. Pyrigesic drop 2 ML > Tem – 100
Hour 32. Pyrigesic drop 2 ML > Tem – 100.04
Hour 35. Pyrigesic drop 2 ML > Tem – 101.05

kindly suggest if we should give Ibugesic plus again or should we continue with Pyrigesic drop.

Brief Answer:
Give Ibugesic plus

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Don't worry. The most likely reason of fever in this age group is self limiting viral illness. They need just symptomatic treatment and good nutrition. They usually improve over a period of few days. Do not get worried about the degree of fever as even trivial infections can present as high spikes in some infants.

I would recommend you to continue with regular ibugesic plus syrup at 6 hourly interval for a day and SOS ( as and when required) there after if fever spikes are more than 100 degrees fahrenheit. Along with this, cold sponging will help if he is comfortable.

Ensure regular feeds to him.

In case he doesn't improve in next 2 days, then do go for a proper clinical examination by pediatrician.

Hopefully this will help you. I would be happy to help you out in any further questions.

Take care
