What Causes Panic Attacks And Mood Swings Post Mirena IUD Insertion?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Jul 2015
Question: The Mirena IUD was placed to help with heavy menstrual cycles. 1 week post insertion I had a debilitating panic attack (I thought I was 32 and having a heart attack!). The OB prescribed Vistaril and said the symptoms should subside. They have not. I have had a panic attack every night and am now feeling jittery 24/7. My labs are all 'normal'. EEG normal. I have had hormones tested, CBC, Iron, etc. Mild anemia. I am on Wellbutrin 150mg bid and Zoloft 50mg-100mg for postpartum depression---I've been on them for 2 years with 0 problems. I am going crazy. The Mirena IUD has completely turned my life upside down. I was normal healthy and active. No dietary or lifestyle changes. This is going on 1 month of these scary panic attacks evening/night, heart palpitations, insomnia, and hyperemotional/edgy during the day--every day. What could be causing this? The doctors tell me 'Mirena doesn't enter your bloodstream' and now have me on xanax!

Brief Answer:
An uncommon side effect - mood changes.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
Mirena IUD contains Levonorgesterel and releases much less progestin into the body than OCP. Most of the side effects are local and often there's very little systemic side effects. Nevertheless, mood changes is one of the side effects.
If you are absolutely sure that the present mood changes have happened after the IUD insertion, then removing the same may be discussed with your doctor than taking more psychoactive medicines.
