What Causes Painful Swelling On The Kneecap?

default
Posted on Tue, 21 Apr 2015
Question: Hello

two weeks ago; i found out that my knee had some swelling( like fluid on the knee) feels like it's only on the kneecap and not under., but no pain, and no discomfort.
I haven't done anything extreme, only some excises, like swimming in the ocean and climber(30 meters down in the ocean), and I found out this swelling 3 days after.

I did go to the doctor 4 days ago, and he told me that this was some fluid build up(not water); and he could't tell me exactly why, but it wasn't serious because it' didn't have any infection.

Im asking you because I want a second opinion, from a specialist; because this was general doctor.

it doesn't look good, but it feels fine. No pain, no discomfort. what to do ??

I have included some pictures, from the left knee(which is normal) and from the right knee(where the swelling is)

Brief Answer:
Due to reactive fluid collection.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
I have seen the pictures attached. Your right knee has a considerable swelling due to collection of fluid inside the knee joint. It can happen due to inflammation of the bursae also.
Since there is no pain or redness, inflammation or infection is not likely. Such fluid usually reabsorbs on its own in few weeks with rest.
In case the swelling is gradually increasing then the fluid can be aspirated with the help of a needle. Local steroid injections can help to reduce the inflammation.
I hope this answers your query.
In case you have additional questions or doubts, you can forward them to me, and I shall be glad to help you out.
Wishing you good health.

thank you

Does this mean, that I should not run for a few weeks or does it just mean rest(like not doing anything extreme ?

and when is enough waiting time, ?

and is this dangerous to my knee and body in any way ?

Brief Answer:
Rest for 3-4 weeks.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
You need to avoid running for a few weeks. Resting for 3-4 weeks should be enough to resolve this problem.
In case the fluid is persistent it can trigger arthritic changes in the knee joint. You can take an anti inflammatory pain killer in case it is painful.
Hope my answer is helpful.
