What Causes Pain Under Left Armpit?

default
Posted on Tue, 28 Oct 2014
Question: I have pain under my left armpit. It seems ok if I'm not doing anything but if I yawn or try to take a deep breath it becomes very sharp for those few seconds. Should I go to the ER or what could it be?

Brief Answer:
Chest muscle strain

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for contacting HCM

You are concerned about having sudden onset of pain just in the underarm area and it gets worse with deep breathing or yawning. Under the armpit are several muscles that are used to help breathing. These are auxiliary breathing muscles and help to move the chest higher when you take deep breaths. Occasionally these muscles can become strained after exercise or after sneezing or yawning. The muscle will gradually improve and heal. In the mean time I recommend you take Tylenol or Naprosyn to help reduce your pain.

I can reassure you that the pain is not an emergency.
