What Causes Pain In Upper Back Radiating To Stomach?

default
Posted on Sat, 28 Feb 2015
Question: for several weeks, at least once or twice a day, I experience a pain in my upper back that moves
to my stomach as a churning, upset stomach sensation. Taking a Rennie tablet soothes the pain
quickly. I have a rx for Rinitidine and that keeps me comfortable for 24 hrs or more. No diarrhea
or constipation. Good appetite. Modest exercise, lots of walking. Sometimes the distress goes
away by itself. It never occurs while eating or in the morning. No problem swallowing. This
condition usually comes on in late afternoon or mid-evening, an hour or so after eating.
Non-smoker, not overweight. Modest wine drinker. Not big on red meat. No history of cancer
in the family. Am 79 years old, white, slender build, married.

Brief Answer:
proton pump inhibitor may help

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

Rennie is a mixture of 2 anti acids- calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate.

Based on the fact that this medication helps to relieve the discomfort, the symptoms described , it is likely that the symptoms are related to GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) or gastritis (inflammation of the lining of the stomach).

These may co exist in some persons.

Ranitidine is a H2 blocker and is also used in reflux and in some instances of gastritis.

You may want to consider the proton pump family of medications.

These have been shown to be better than the anti acids or H2 blockers in helping with these symptoms.

Examples are prilosec, prevacid, nexium, aciphex, protonix.

If used consistently , these medications would help to significantly prevent the symptoms from occurring.

You may also to monitor to determine if there are any particular foods that may be causing the problem.
A food diary may help.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
