What Causes Pain In The Wrist Radiating To The Finger?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 May 2017
Question: Hello I have had arthritic pain in my wrist radiating into thumb and all around my wrist. I have tried anti-inflammatories which help but I do not not want to take these daily. I have also used all sorts of topical creams with little relief, I have been reading about DMSO and have read that some people love it. Is this something I can try and are there any precautions I should be concerned with

Brief Answer:
I think you may ask your physician about steroid injections , exclude any neurological disorders , and DMSO ointments is helpful in such cases if patients skin responds well and did not show allergic reactions or bad odors .

Detailed Answer:
Hi i am Dr Ahmed Aly
thanks for using HealthcareMagic site ,
I had gone through your question and understand your concerns ..

In my opinion i think you have a kind of arthritis or tendinitis , such cases responds well with anti-inflammatory drugs and hot massages with gels , B12 vitamin supplements and muscle relaxants and creams . from your given history you mentioned having high blood pressure and using medications to lower and maintain your condition .
I think if your wrist problem is chronic steroid tabs or injections may be prescribed by your orthopedician will be helpful but the risk of steroids and increasing blood pressure may prevent them from prescribing it to you , so i think you may use topical or inarticular injections will be more appropriate in your case with good slabbing and avoidance of overexertion on your wrist joint .
In some cases the cause of pain maybe neurological due to nerve compression in people who over use their wrist joints like tennis players or golfers or guitarists or even people who use typing for a long periods of time on daily basis so i recommend NCVG ( nerve conduction velocity graph or EMG ) to exclude it or any other nervous injuries like CTS ( carpal tunnel syndrome ) which is common , if it persists .
Nowadays a lot of researches are done on DMSO in helping arthritis patients due to the ability of such substances in its ability in penetrating skin and biological membranes but the main use of it is for interstitial cystitis of the bladder .
you may give it a try but there are some precautions that you may take in concern like it have bad effects on eyes , garlic flavor from mouth or odor from skin is common , some itching and dryness of skin was also mentioned in some researches .
If you want to try it i recommend only topical forms of it and see if your skin responds well to it as it may also show some allergic reactions in rare cases (you mentioned having allergy towards penicillin and erythromycin ) so ask your physician before using it .
