Posted on Tue, 22 Jul 2014
Question: Hello, I am a 53yr old female. I am Hypothyroid but at present not taking medication for this condition as advised by my consultant. Just now I am experiencing pain and a lot of discomfort in the upper left quarter of my abdomen extending to my back which is making my chest feel tight ? Two years ago I was admitted to the hospital over night , given an ultrasound and discovered that I had Kidney stones.
This is making me feel really irritable and causing me lack of sleep.
Can you please advise?
Kind Regards

Brief Answer:
Can be hydronephrosis of the left kidney.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for our query.
Read the history of stone; looks to be diagnosed as left kidney stones.

Now you have a pain in the left upper quadrant of abdomen. extending to the back making the chest feel tight.

The probable diagnosis is fullness of the left kidney (hydronephrosis), may be due to an impacted stone in the pelvis of the kidney or the upper ureter. This can cause the symptoms you have described.
The diagnosis can be confirmed by an ultrasonography and urine tests: routine, microscopy culture and sensitivity. This will help in giving the most proper antibiotic if you have a UTI too.

The treatment will depend upon the findings.
Antibiotics and pain-killers as required.
Take plenty of fluids orally.
