Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: My lowest rib is about a finger width away from my hip bone. I have been hitting my ribs in my hip bone on my rib. It hurts when I sit for too long and sometimes when standing. Why is it hurting? Is there a way to stop it from happening and stop the pain?

Brief Answer:
I need to have little more detail of the illness

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I have studied your case. I think that you may be having some bony swelling from ribs which is causing pain.Normal ribs do not reach up to hip joint.I have following questions for you to understand your disease.
1. Since when you are having this pain?
2.Did you have pain at rest or only with walking?
3.Did you get any x rays or ultrasound?
Please send me answers of these questions? I will try my best to help you.

I had this pain during my teen years but after I gained weight it went away. I recently lost 120 lbs and it's back.
it is worse when I sit for more than 15 mins. there are even times when my ribs catch on my hip bones.
I've had x rays in the past but nothing recently.

Brief Answer:
I think it is pain due to muscle weakness

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can assure you that this is not due to ribs touching your hip joint. Rather it is due to weakness of your abdominal muscles. I have following suggestions for you.
1.Get a ultra sound of the abdomen. It will tell us if their is any weakness or hernia of the muscles. It will also if their is any lump in the abdomen.
2.Get a new x ray of the abdomen to see if their is any bony growth from ribs which is causing such trouble.
3.you need to start physiotherapy to improve your muscle strength.
4.take Brufen tablet if pain is severe. Also abdominal belts are available.
I hope this answer will be useful for you.Let me know if their is any other followup questions.
thanks
