default
Posted on Sat, 7 Jun 2014
Question: i have had pain in the area I would call my ovaries. I am 63 years old and finished menopause about 10-15 yrs ago. this started last night and I thought I was constipated, then this morning after standing for as long as it takes to peel an apple, I had sharp pains under my stomach on the right and left sides. also I am 5ft 2 in tall and weigh 202 lbs, having recently gained 20 lbs back after losing 90 lbs slowly (took 11/2 yrs to lose with eating healthy and walking, etc.) now while sitting down I don't feel any pain don't know about when standing up, been sitting for 15 mins. what causes this pain and is it just constipation, I've never been constipated before. I had a small bowel movement this morning. Also, I'm not taking any medications.

Brief Answer:
Colonoscopy is necessary.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

At your age such symptoms can indicate large intestine problems. This can be a constipation, however it can also indicate bowels obstruction due to colon cancer.
Please note that the risk of colon cancer significantly rises over the age of 50. That is why every person over this age should have colonoscopy every 10 years.
As you have gained some weight, your symptoms can also indicate hypothyroidism.

I suggest you to consult your doctor. Colonoscopy needs to be done. Before this test, thyroid tests, abdominal ultrasound, abdominal X-ray seems advisable.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
