Question: My husband is currently experiencing pain in his lower back, thighs, and calfs. He also has a lot of pain in his left elbow where there is a painful knot at the proximal end of this elbow. He is being treated currently for hypertension with chlordiadone and lisprinal. What might be causing him pain and swelling in his elbow?

Brief Answer:
Chlorthalidone may causes all these symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I have read your query.

From your history it appears that chlorthalidone is the medication which causes-

joint pain, stiffness, or swelling

lower back or side pain

pain in joints or muscles

pains in stomach, side, or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back.

But there are other causes of pain and swelling in elbow also.

So to make exact diagnosis get serum uric acid, serum RA factor quantitative, ESR, CRP, fasting blood sugar levels done and send me the report.

Till then you can talk with your family doctor regarding chlorthalidone so that he may change this medicine with another one.

Add aceclofenac+thiocolchicoside three times a day by discussing it with your local doctor for relieving pain and swelling in joint.

I hope it helps.

Thanks.

Dr.Singh.
