Question: Hi, My wife today finishes 41st week of pregnancy. And still not having contractions. Fetal heart-rate is fine and she feels the baby move as well. But she's not having contractions or pain. Doctors said they would induce labor on Monday. Should we be concerned?

Brief Answer:
There is no need to be concerned.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcare magic.
I am Dr Ramadevi Wani. I will be answering your concerns today.

About one in five women don't start labor on their own and need induction of labor. There is no need to be concerned since she does not have any medical or pregnancy problems.

For similar pregnant woman in my hospital I do sweeping of membranes ( internal examination to separate pregnancy sac from neck of the uterus) at 40 weeks of pregnancy. This releases prostaglandins which help in initiating labor early. If this has not been done for your wife she can consult her doctor today for the same.

I also suggest that fetal heart rate monitoring for half hour ( non stress test) be done today and tomorrow. This is not a must since she has good baby movements.
But I prefer this practice in my hospital.

In the mean time any time she feels that baby movements are reduced/ has watery or bloody discharge per vagina she should go to emergency room.
