What Causes Nausea, Sweating And Fainting Spell During A Routine IV Flush?

default
Posted on Thu, 6 Nov 2014
Question: I passed out recently during a routine IV flush. As soon as the sodium chloride was administered, I started feeling nauseous, sweaty, and eventually passed out. No other drugs had been administered prior. My surgery was cancelled, with a recommendation to get a full blood panel. My blood panel and EKG all came back well within normal range. Could I be allergic to the sodium chloride, and if so, is there an alternative solution that can be used in its place?

Brief Answer:
This is not an allergy...Vasovaga malaise!

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am so sorry to hear about what you experienced. This is not typical of an allergic reaction to sodium Chloride. As a matter of fact, I have never heard of allergy to sodium chloride.

Your description falls in line with a vasovagal shock. This is no XXXXXXX as all the laboratory investigations are normal. I will suggest that you get more support during difficult moments like these so as to lessen the intensity of emotions that is responsible for this overreaction of the nervous pathways.

In all, this is not an allergy but a vasovagal reaction. Managing your concerns, anxiety and offering more support during moments like these would lessen these effects and stop the reaction. There should be no fear using this product in future but how it is used and in what context is all that matters.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
