What Causes Mild Sore Throat When Diagnosed With Generalised Lymphadenopathy?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 May 2017
Question: Generalised lymphadenopathy. Started in right side of groin a few months ago. I can feel 3 or 4 lymph nodes on right side of groin, some matted and mostly tender. Left side has one node, mostly tender. Additional nodes on neck and in the supraclavicular area, including an enlarged Virchow's node. There are also small nodes under the jaw. Most seem to be between 1-2cm from what I can feel. The ones under the jaw are too small to be moved, but the rest are movable. Neck lymph nodes are slightly painful. Groin ones generally painless.

Only a mild sore throat and leg pain when the groin lymph nodes started. Groin lymph nodes discovered around 2 months ago, neck and jaw a month ago. Lymph nodes wax an wane a bit according to time of day and weather. Other than that, no significant changes in size

Should I be immediately worried? Thank you
To slightly add o the above, the smallest lumps under the jaw are slightly harder than the rest, probably because of the small size. Thank you

Brief Answer:
No need to worry immediately

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

The nodes are quite small in size and no steady progression over time. Groin nodes of that size are not significant. In neck also, going by your description I don't think they are significant.

These are probably slightly enlarged from reaction to day to day infections. I don't feel any urgent evaluation is necessary.

Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply. Should I be concerned about the lack of any symptoms ( such as any illness ) which could have caused this? Additionally, a point I missed out earlier was that a couple of the nodes are a bit long (max 3 cm from what I feel) but the width is only 1-2 cm. Thank you very much for the help again

Brief Answer:
No, lack of symptoms not a major concern

Detailed Answer:
if the size is really that long then I would recommend an ultrasound to look at the character of nodes. If that favours benign, then nothing to worry.

Thank you, one final query. The node that first discovered ( in the inguinal area) is a bit more harder than the rest at times, ( like 50% tender) ( seems to get softer based on weather and time of day). This is as movable as the rest though. Any cause for concern regarding this particular one?

Regarding the length of the node I mentioned earlier, it's probably closer to 2cm than 3cm

Thank you very much for all the help and guidance

Brief Answer:
Don't think this is a cause for concern

Detailed Answer:
As the node becomes soft, most likely it is benign.
If node size is within 2 cm and not growing, we can observe.
