What Causes Middle Left Abdominal Pain?

default
Posted on Mon, 21 Sep 2015
Question: Hello doc

i have noticed an occasional and mild pain in my left middle abdominal area. Maybe i get it once every couple of weeks, I've noticed the recent aches have been after drinking (i drink occasionally but nothing over the top). also even rarer I'll have pain feeling, in which the area is painful to the touch. I noted my concerns to a gastrologist last year who did a endoscopy which was normal, no ulcers and a abdominal ultrasound which was normal. Liver enzymes were normal but i don't think pancreas hormones were tested. And I've read online that ultrasounds and blood test can unreliable for checking the panc which is concerning. My father was a heavy alcoholic who died quickly of pancreatitis and i have a bit of health anxiety so i try to avoid running out to the doctor for every little thing. These symptoms in the past have resolved themselves and i just forget about it. I guess my question is should i go back to the gastro and what tests should i get if so? are my concerns warranted?
Could this be nothing or should it be concerning? I'm only 23

Thanks in advance

Brief Answer:
Get Serum Lipase and Amylase done.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I do not think you have Pancreatitis. Other ailments have mostly been ruled out by the Endoscopy and Ultrasound you got done a while ago.
Investigations to diagnose the severity of Pancreatitis are Serum Lipase and Amylase. You can get those done. The investigation of choice would be a CECT abdomen. This would tell us the character of the pancreas and if there is any inflammation or fluid collection around it. But I dont think it is indicated to be done in your case presently. Solely for ruling out due to the doubt in your mind might be an indication which you would need to discuss with your GP or treating Physician or Surgeon.
Do let me know if there are any other queries I can help you with.
See your Doctor and he can help you get the blood tests done at least.
Take care,

the pain does feel superficial and i believe the stomach is most superficial to the skin and the pancreas is behind it , no back pain to speak of. With that ruled out could you hypothesize to what it could be, perhaps just general irritation from alcohol consumption?

thanks

Brief Answer:
It could be alcohol induced Gastritis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Good to hear from you.
It could be Gastritis induced by Alcohol.
I suggest you take Cap Omeprazole 20mg or Tab Pantoprazole 40mg at least half an hour before alcohol consumption on empty stomach. This could rule out Gastritis as a cause for your pain.
That would be the commonest reason for the pain.
Try this and do let me know.
Take care,
