What Causes Lump Around Bruising After Injury?

default
Posted on Tue, 18 Aug 2015
Question: I am 55 years old and took a short hard fall godown the stairs in my home. Slipped off the first step and wend air born, landing hard on the left side of my button. Sweeping was instantly acute. Went to a walk-in clinic and then X-ray. No breaks but a huge contusion . I have seen my G.P. And see him again this Thursday. I have been using Arnica gel and Arnica sublingual. Hot and cold treatments a plus deep message. The bruising has dissipated but a hard lump the size of a grapefruit remains. Will I needle aspiration or is there anything else I can do to avoid it

Brief Answer:
Aspiration might be needed if fluid collection is seen.

Detailed Answer:
Hello Mam.
Your treatment has been fine.
I dont think there is any need for worry.
The only thing is that if the lump is big and painful then aspiration can be contrmplated as large hematomas can get infected.
I would suggest an Ultrasound of the area to know whether it is a Solid lesion or fluid. If it is mixed then how much fluid is there. This would let us know whether there would be any benefit of aspiration because a solid mass will not be amenable to aspiration. However a fluid collection can very well be aspirated and you would feel a lot of relief by the aspiration.
Therefore you need to consult your GP for a preferable Ultrasound and aspiration only if significant fluid collection is there.
Do let me know if there are any other queries on this issue.
Take care.
