Posted on Thu, 26 Jun 2014
Question: I am on my 4th day of amoxicillin. Last two days have had loose yellowish/orange stools. Have always had an issue with antibotics, just concerned on color. Was prescribed it for bad sinus infection. I am 39yr old female. Any suggestions is appreciated!

Detailed Answer:
Dear Mellisa,

Greetings from health care magic!!! I am Dr Thakker and shall be answering your question.

Stools are normally yellow brown in colour due to bile pigments. Amoxicillin is an antibiotic which kills the normal bacterial flora in the gut. This commonly leads to formation of loose, black and tarry stools while on amoxicilling treatment. Diarrhoea is a common complication as well. Orange colour stools are an uncommon occurrence. However it is not something very alarming.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.

Thank you for the response. I should mention I dont have a gallbladder. So in hindsight this makes sense. Is there anything OTC that would help?

Dear Mellisa,

Thank you for your response. I would suggest not to worry too much about the colour change. You can take a prebiotic capsule or yogut rich in lactobacilli cultures. They would normalise your intestinal flora which is wiped out by amoxicillin.

I hope this helps you out. If you have any more questions, please do not hesitate to write back to me.

Yours sincerely,
Dr Thakker.
