What Causes Lef Swelling When On Levothyroxine For Hypothyroidism?

Question: I wanted to ask about hypothyroidism. About 2 years ago, I was diagnosed with hypothyroid. The doctor put me on Levothyroxine 75mcg/1 per day. Recently, I started feeling jittering and anxious so two months ago, I decided, without consulting my physician, to reduce the dosage by half per day = 37.5mcg. Well, within 2 months I was very lethargic again, could sleep 8 hours and still want more, could fall asleep after getting up in the morning. Now 2 months into lower dose, I have been experiencing leg swelling-original ankle and calf hard swelling-not pitting edema type-rock hard. I read something about hypothyroid and thought is was that so for last 7 days I have been taking the full dose again of the 75mcg of Levothyroxine. It stopped the swelling in the ankles and top of foot completely. But calf is still rock hard and swollen-not horribly-but enough that it is uncomfortable after my all-day desk job. My toes ARE NOT swollen, nor is the top of my foot now, my hands nor my arms nor face are swollen either. Can reducing my dose to 37.5 mcgafter 2 years at steady dose and tested by doctor twice to be correct at 75mcg be causing my recent leg swelling. I have heard a lot about hard leg swelling and untreated thyroid? IF IT IS THE CAUSE HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE AT THE 75MCG BEFORE THE SWELLING IS COMPLETELY RESOLVED IN MY LEGS. Note: The only other medication I take and have taken for years now is 40mg/1 day of Celexa.

Brief Answer: at least 12 weeks of stable thyroid balance. Detailed Answer: Dear XXXX, Hi! the mistake you have already realized so i don't need to re- emphasize the importance of a good thyroid balance. but i must tell you one thing, never change your dose without confirming your lab values. if thyroid balance is normal never interfere with the dose. now the query you have asked in bold letters is how long it will take to normalize, ma'm, minimum of 12 weeks after attaining a normal balance. so that means first 6 weeks will go in bringing the thyroid status to normal , then you stay on that balance for another 12 weeks, without disturbing it again, then only you will realize that things are getting better. Regards!

So, am I YOU ARE SAYING THAT MY CHANGING MY THYROID DOSAGE HAS CAUSED MY HARD LEG SWELLING? IS THIS COMMON WHEN CHANGING THYROID DOSAGE? DO I NEED TO BE CONCERNED OR JUST WAIT OUT THE CHANGE TO RESTABLIZE?

Brief Answer: Wait and continue the same dose. Detailed Answer: Dear ma'm, hi! suddenly reducing the dose of thyroxine when it is doing good makes you hypothyroid and so features of hypothyroidism will occur. edema is a feature of hypothyroidism. so correcting the dose back to normal will solve the prob
