Posted on Mon, 9 Nov 2015
Question: Hello Doctor

I had some serious communicable allergy on right hand at around 12noon today which had itching as well (Pictures I will send them through email). I did not rubbed it and while sleeping in the afternoon I acicenteally rubbed my left ear, now (an hour ago) left ear also got that thing. It is reddish spots with lot of itching at both the places. I have currently applied Betnovate - N at both the places.

Please suggest me a suitable solution for that. I did not eat from outside and there is no other symptoms I can observe.

Pictures have been uploaded

One for ear and one for hand.

Brief Answer:
Acute urticaris/ hives; oral antihistamines and calamine lotion

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us

I have read your query and I have also reviewed the Images. I can see that the ear lobe is red and swollen, however I could not see clearly the involvement on your hand (probably you have applied cream)
You seem to have developed Hives/ Urticaria.
Hives usually present as redness, itching and wheals/ welts at various body sites, either simultaneously or in a short span of time.
If you think that the condition has spread from your hand to ear due to touch, that is incorrect.
The cause of Hives is usually an allergy to either food, food preservatives, drugs(e.g painkillers, antibiotics etc), hypesensitivity reaction to viral infections e.g common cold/ flu etc. A lot of times (50%) it is not possible to idenitfy the cause
I would suggest you take a tablet of cetrizine 10 mg once daily in evening and a tablet of loratadine 10 mg (Lorfast) once daily during the day, for a 5 days period. Usually hives begin to settle down within a few hours (4 hours) of initiation of treatment.
Topically you may use a soothing lotion e.g calamine lotion rather than betnovate.
If the condition does not improve as expected Or becomes worse I would suggest you to visit a dermatologist in your vicinity for a review and then may possibly require a steroid shot or a short course (a week) of oral steroids.

Thank you doctor. I must be from food only as I tried a new food this morning and I am not on any medication before that.

Hope it doesn't appear while the treatment is ON. I don't want that unnecessary irritation, its weird :(

Thanks again.
