default
Posted on Tue, 31 Mar 2015
Question: my eyes become extremely itchy and face gets really hot and burning under my eyes it becomes like a rash and is painful and turns dark red.
my eyelids also have like a rash and during a shower its like razors when the water hits it and i rub them. my scalp and face gets very itchy as well. Many times it is so bad that i cannot sleep at night from the itching. I there doesn't seem to be a cream that helps. This comes and goes and lasts about 3 - 5 days. I lost a patch of hair about a nickel size which was gone about 6 months not sure if that is related.
please ask for more info and what i can do. I did a patch test and it came out negative. I don't seem to be allergic to foods or none that cause anything immediate

Brief Answer:
Your symptoms are more suggestive of allergy.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
By your history and description, in my opinion you are having mostly acute allergy,
Because you are having sudden onset of itching, rash on face and eyelids.
They are recurrent in nature with short history of 3-5 days.
All these points favour allergy more.
Sometimes allergy can be severe and topical drugs are not much effective. So in such cases oral antihistamine and anti allergic drugs are given. Oral steroids are also given. In very severe cases injectable drugs are also given.
Best treatment for allergy is to identify the allergen and complete avoidance of it.
So try to remember , if you have started to use new clothes, new bedsheets, new pillow covers, new soap, shampoo, new face cream etc in last 5 days. Any of these can be allergen and can cause severe allergic symptoms.
Other then allergy hyperthyroidism and vitamin b12 deficiency can cause similar symptoms.
Bald patch can be seen in hyperthyroidism.
So you can get done thyroid function test and vitamin b 12 level to rule out hyperthyroidism and vitamin b 12 deficiency , respectively.
So let me know
1. Have you start using new things (mentioned above) in last week?
2. Have to tested for thyroid function test and vitamin b12 level?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Hello,
I have not started using anything new clothes or shampoo or soaps. this condition has been ongoing for the last 3 years and has slowly progressed to happening about every 10 days versus every couple months at the start.
I have not been tested for thyroid function or vitamin B12. I can start taking vitamin B12 right away if you think that may help.
Also i didn't mention that my eyes tend to water alot when the symtoms start. I wear glasses and i have an appointment to see the eye doctor on Saturday. its been about 2 years since my last visit.
I think I have some sort of allergy but cannot determine what it might be.
Thanks

Yes, you can start vitamin b 12.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
In my opinion you are having allergy mostly.
And watering eyes is characteristic feature of allergic conjunctivitis.
And yes, you can definitely start vitamin b 12 as it is water soluble vitamin and does not cause any damage if it is in excess.
So no harm in starting b12.
And yes, consult eye doctor for your watering eyes. Do discuss about allergy with him.
Hope I have solved your query.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
