Question: Hi
Just yesterday I saw little tiny white bumps on the shaft of my penis. The only way I could see it is to strecht the extra skin that I have but when it's not strecht it's not that visible. Sometime it itch, but it's been there for a while now like a month. What could it be?

Brief Answer:
Needs a clinical assessment and related investigation for proper advice.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

The white little bumps what you see could be due to accumulation of sebum, the secretion of sebaceous glands in the skin. This could occur of its own or could occur due to injury to the skin appendages during shaving. These are usually benign harmless swellings, unless causing discomfort by the way of secondary infection or inflammation.

At the same time, one should also consider the possibility of herpes infection of the penile skin, but in your case this might not be the case due to absence of any pain or discomfort.

The exact diagnosis could be made only by a physical examination and with an excision biopsy if considered necessary by your doctor.

If I were your doctor, after a personal physical examination I would advise you not to poke it or fiddle with it to avoid a secondary infection, and to report for reassessment in case of any change in size and shape of the lump or starting of any discomfort or pain. In addition, I might send the scraping from the skin for a microscopic examination in the pathology lab.

I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.

Hello good morning Dr Shareef.

Could there be a possibility that it's some type of herpes infection even though it's bee a month since I've seen it?

Like I said before I could only see the white tiny bumps when I stretch the extra skin but when I don't stretch it I can't see it.

If it was herpes infection how long do you think it would have lasted on it, because it has been awhile now that it's on my penis. It doesn't hurt and when I play with it a little bit it gets really itchy. It has been 20+ days and still on it. I also consider myself a dirty person when it comes to hygiene.

also last question, Yesterday I got this dry redness on the base of my penis and it was itching but has stop and I think because I shaved also. It was really dry when i put lotion on it, it kinda help. what do you think it is?

Brief Answer:
You possibly are right about it not being a herpes infection.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX! It was good to hear from you so soon which shows the concern for your health.

Yes you are right. Herpes infection for so many days without any discomfort like pain is a remote possibility as I already mentioned earlier.

These bumps are more likely to be starting of sebaceous cyst not uncommonly seen on the penile and scrotal skin which are very slow growing and might not need any treatment unless secondarily infected or start growing bigger at a fast rate.

The redness on the base of penis with itching could be due to a fungal infection. I would advise you to use an anti fungal cream on it. At the same time I would also advise you to look after your own personal hygiene possibly more than what you do now.

I hope I have answered your query. In case of any further doubt, you are free to ask. All the best. Dr Shareef.

Is fungul infection contagious?
I'll be honest I don't take shower a lot and when I woke up it was itching and and dry and there was some red bumps on it, so I put aveeno lotion on it and it help. But when I shaved my pubic hair it didn't help the itch. This morning I took a shower and out the lotion again and all the itching and dryness relieved. You still think is fungus? It was red and irritatingly dry. Lotion seemed to comfort it. I also concluded from looking at stuff online that it might be thrust or fungus infection. My other question would be that late I have those dryness on the tip of my penis, it was unusual because that never happened before but dry skin runs through me I always have dry skin but skin on the tip of my penis was different from before. I put some aveno skin lotion and it works. What's the cause of the dryness?

Brief Answer:
Persoanl hygiene is on the priority list of your treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX!

Yes, fungal infection is contagious and it could spread by direct skin to skin contact, or if someone uses the under garments used by a person harboring the infection. It does occur more frequently in those with less care for their personal hygiene without taking a daily shower. So I am sure you would henceforth give importance to this aspect of the treatment.

Aveeno lotion is a moisturizer lotion and so it would relieve the dryness and reduce the itching. However, in case it was a fungal infection, this would recur again and again. To know if it was a fungal infection or not, you might have to show it to a dermatologist in your area when it comes back again.

Hope you would now give importance to the priority in the management of the problem, that is your personal hygiene. Take care. Dr Shareef.
