default
Posted on Tue, 17 Mar 2015
Question: Hello Doctor,
I am having continuous itching in my body, it is random on some parts of the body. I have visited the dermatologist but it didn't worked out.
Somebody suggested that it can be food allergy, I did some observation and found that the itching increases when I eat egg. I have stopped eating egg, but after that itching is reduced but not stopped completely.
Can you please suggest what should I do now, what is the cure of this. This itching started couple of months back.

Above details would help me to know your complaints better and therefore to make suggestions for you more specifically.

At present, from your provided information, I would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. Itching can be due to allergy as well as without allergy also.

2. For symptom relief, I usually suggest my patients to take an antihistamine like levocetirizine or cetirizine or hydroxyzine. Please note that they control itching temporarily till their effect last.

3. I would also suggest you to apply calamine lotion over itchy areas regularly.

4. Please do not scratch the itchy areas as scratching aggravates itching.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please include that in follow-up also.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards,

Brief Answer:
Most commonly dry skin and/or micronutrient deficiencies

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

Thank you for your follow-up.

I went through your details and would like to make suggestions for you as follows:

1. As you have ONLY ITCHING without any skin rash, I would not think of allergy. Allergic itching is almost always accompanied by skin changes.

2. Causes of itching without skin affection could be many such as dry skin, diabetes mellitus, thyroid disease, iron deficiency, other micronutrient deficiencies, sometimes some liver or kidney diseases.

3.Looking at your complete details, I would not think of serious causes like liver or kidney disease or thyroid disease. So I would think mainly of dry skin and/or micronutrient deficiencies.

4. First of all, I would suggest you to treat dry skin. I would agree with regular application of moisturizer cream/lotion, especially immediately after bathing to retain the moisture in skin.

Please do this practice regularly till your skin improves.

Application of coconut oil over dry skin is also other option if you like.

5. I also suggest my such patients a good multivitamin-multimineral supplement regularly for 2-3 months. I make sure that the supplement contains at least vitamin E, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, etc.

6. If this does not help, I would suggest you investigations like complete blood count, ESR, random blood sugar first. This will help to identify if you have anemia or possibility of diabetes mellitus.

7. Aggravation by egg could be co-incidental. If it happened just once, I would not suggest you to restrict eggs. If it has happened twice or thrice every time after eating eggs, I would suggest you to try eggs after 3-6 months.

8. I usually suggest my such patients to restrict/reduce packed food items containing preservatives/colors etc. Sometimes it helps.

9. Please wear loose fitting cotton clothes. They are the best for those who have itching problems.

10. For patients with itching without skin rash, I do not suggest allergy testing.

Hope above suggestions will be helpful to you.

Should you have any further query, please feel free to ask on follow-up.

Wish you the best of the health ahead.

Thank you & Regards,
