What Causes Irritating Small Bump On Labia?

default
Posted on Tue, 13 Jan 2015
Question: Hi,
Over the past year or so, every few months I will notice a small bump of skin on my libia that is completely painless unless I touch it wrong or it is irritated when I wipe. This bump will eventually go away and I'll forget about it until another one starts hurting months later. I have never had sex, but do participate in oral sex. We are both 100% sure it could not be HPV but the symptoms I read online seem to somewhat line up. After closer inspection, I can see that there are other bumps down there but it seems as if they are in a pattern and are meant to be there (with only one of them causing tenderness). They are flesh colored and small. Almost look like little skin tags. I have not had any fluids come out of them, no unusual discharge, and no itching. Is it normal to have such bumps on the labia or should it be smooth? Although I have never had sex, reading up on HPV is scaring me. Could that be it?

Brief Answer:
"folliculitis"/"Molluscum contagiosum": kindly upload few good resolution

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for small bump of skin on your labia.

After analyzing your query it appears to be related to the condition of "Molluscum contagiosum" ( a simple viral infection) or could be simple "folliculitis"(simple infection of hair root).

In view to help you best I request you to kindly upload few good resolution pictures of the affected area. For that you have a feature on the right side of the page or else you can mail your photos to :

Is it common to have glands like the ones in the pictures? Is the labia supposed to be smooth or is it okay to be bumpy like mine? I am skeptical that it could be HPV because i have never had sex and although i participate in oral sex, neither of us have had vaginal sex before. And if it was HPV, my partner would have contracted it from me by now? He has no signs or symptoms. Does everything look normal? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
It is simple proliferation and prominence of the hair roots and oil glands.

Detailed Answer:
Hello young lady,

Welcome again to the forum and thanks for your further follow up.

After analyzing the pictures let me reassure you that you don't have any type of viral infection and no any sexually transmitted infection too. These are not at all warts so just relax about warts or HPV first. It is neither "folliculitis" nor "Molluscum contagiosum" too.

So you must be wondering what the problem is!!!

It is simple proliferation and prominence of the hair roots and oil glands at the genital area.

Now to tell you medically about this condition - This is a condition of mild prominence of the hair root and oil gland attached to it.

To explain it simply, we have hair all over our body which have opening of the oil glands attached to it. As we know that our genital area have lot of coarse hair and this area is always been closed, so there is always a chance of more prominence of hair root at this area. In some of the person it is tendency to get more pronounced due to high oil secretion or mild blockage of the pore of the oil glands.

So these appear more prominent at one time and then gets normalized at other time.

Some of the times these hair root and oil gland can become mild to moderately inflamed and infected which can lead to folliculitis.

There are certain suggestions which are helpful:

- The most important thing you should do is to not touch, pinch, pop or squeeze the area by any means.

-Stay away from hot and humid climate.

-Take two times bath and maintain good hygiene.

-Wear cotton clothes and cotton undergarments and especially change the undergarments two times a day.

All the above measures will help you in reducing the prominence of these hair roots.

I again fully reassure you that these are not at all warts or HPV so just relax about warts. You have quite normal skin which is quite natural in its appearance so do not worry about anything.,

I hope this information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

"Wish you good health and happy new year"
