Posted on Mon, 8 Dec 2014
Question: Dear doctor

My name is XXXXXXX , female, 26 years old

I have a baby boy born on 21/01/2014

Below is my period cycle after the delivery

1st on Aug 8th or 9th (normal one)
2nd on Sep 23rd (normal one)
3rd on Oct 23rd (but lasted for almost 7 days with heavy bleeding )
4th one on Nov 12th, once again with heavy bleeding

Before conceiving the cycle used to be regular with a gap of 27 to 30 days and bleeding normally for 3 to 4 days

As now the cycle duration is different and irregular , I am worrying of any issues.

Pls guide and suggest

regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
menstrual pattern is related to weaning of baby

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for consulting health care magic.

After the conception , you had your first period in august after your lactational amenorrhoea got over.
The prime concern is if you are breast feeding your child even today then it is likely that your menses may get irregular due to prolactin secretion while suckling. Also such a pattern is common in the first year when the mother tries to wean the baby off breast milk.

You need to maintain a menstrual calendar for at least 3 months before any further investigation is warranted.

If the cycles remain polymenorrhagic then a hormonal profile needs to be done.

In the meantime to prevent excessive blood loss you may take TAB MEFENAMIC ACID 500mg thrice a day from day 3 to reduce the amount of bleeding for 3 days . This would help you .
