What Causes Irregular Bowel Movements After Gallbladder Surgery?

default
Posted on Thu, 23 Feb 2017
Question: A little over a year ago a had an acute infection of my pancreas. I had an 8 day stay in ICU as they gave me IV antibiotics and potassium. They finally removed my gall bladder and I spent almost 2 weeks in a rehab facility to regain strength. The surgery was done robotically and I found out later that the stint placed between my pancreas and gall bladder was still in place. My digestion and bowel habits have changed. Within 5 - 10 min. After eating I can hear my food moving down through my esophagus and into the stomach and then bowels. I often have either constipation or diarrhea. My stools have an abnormally horrid odor. After eating I also have an ache in my belly and some cramping until I expel gas or have a bowel movement. Periodically, I have also have intense nausea. I had a colonoscopy about 5 yrs. ago theyhhu said it was "pristine". I have so many areas of physical difficulty and I don't want to go through a lot uof tests because I am under the care of a pain management group since a fall in which I had 3 fractured cervichal vertebrae: c -5,6,7 , bulging disk between c3 - 4 and a separated shoulder, so I'm taking pain med. percocettûe 10/325hmg. I'm 74 yrs. old so I'm not looking for a major time of medical testing until I'm more healed in my neck, shoulder, arm and right leg/knee/ ankle! I'm just wondering if any of these digestive issues could be of a serious nature or the expected/symptoms that normally follow such digestive experiences?

Brief Answer:
Chlordiazepoxide with antiacidity medicine are advisable

Detailed Answer:
Hello Ma'am
Welcome to health care magic, I appreciate your concern.

Irregular bowel movement might be related to stent placed between liver and pancreas, slowing of intestine with age, irritable bowel syndrome or Acid peptic disease, food allergy or intolerance.

I would advise you to take Chlordiazepoxide and anti-acidity Medicine like pantoprazole or ranitidine group of drugs after discussing with your doctor.

you should take lots of fresh fruits and vegetables with dietary fiber supplement in your diet.
You should try to avoid stress and anxiety by relaxation exercises yoga and meditation under guidance of your doctor since you have cervical problem.

You should not take fatty fried spicy and junk food and carbonated beverages.

Looking at your description your digestive issues doesn't seem to be a serious issue which can corrected with above mentioned dietary modifications and medicines.

Please consult your pain management clinic for reduction in doses of percocettue 10/375 mg and slowly taper it down, it could be a cause for constipation and slowing of bowel movement.
You should look for other pain management drugs or technique about which your doctor knows.

Hope you will find my answer informative and useful please feel free to ask for follow up question, I will gladly answer you.
Best wishes
