Posted on Fri, 11 Jul 2014
Question: I am 58 years old and was diagnosed with High BP of 150/90 5 years ago. I was administered with concor 5mg and slowly my dosage has been put down to 1/4 which is 1.25mg for almost 2 years and my reading has been normal. But when I tried not to use it for 2 -3 days, my heart rate will be very fast and blood pressure will jump to 180/100 and feeling like dying. The side effect to me is so strong, If yes can you please suggest an alternative medicine.

Brief Answer:
Need tapering & physician monitoring

Detailed Answer:
Dear friend,
Welcome to Health Care Magic

The drug is a Beta Blocker / and rebound (heart rate & blood pressure) is common at withdrawal.
It must be tapered in STAGES – half the dose for a week / quarter for another week / quarter on alternate days for a week…

The decision to change MUST be made by your physician…
There are several classes of drugs and several drugs in each class… Your doctor will choose an alternative medicine.
Usually an ARB (Angiotensin Receptor BlockerOlmesartan, for example) or ACEI (Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitor - Ramipril, for example) are started in a small dose SIMULTANEOUSLY with the present drug and stepped up – as the first drug is being withdrawn.
CCB (Calcium Channel Blockers) are useful in many – if the heart rate is high, Diltiazem may be preferred (avoiding amlodipine or nifedipine)
Diuretics (water pills) are given often.

Most people need more than one drug to reach target levels…
Electrolytes, Kidney function and lipid need to be investigated

Take care
Good luck
