What Causes Increased Heart Rate During Gym Workouts?

Posted on Wed, 31 May 2017
Question: Good afternoon Doctor,
Im male 34 years from XXXXXXX Iam Non diabetic and Non hypertensive, Non smoker and Non alcoholic. Im using 25mg Eltroxin for my hypothyroid from last 4 years. My job requires slightly physical stress. My height is 165cm weight 69kgs. I used to walk daily atleast an average 30-40min per day from last 8-10 years.
Recently I have joined a GYM to lose the extra belly weight and for some strength training.
Im using Tread mill for 30 min a day but the problem is my Heart rate goes upto 187 and some times 200 when i run at 12kmph on it. The information on net shows that you should not go beyond 85% of your MHR. And my theoretical MHR comes around 157. So my question is
1. How safe is to go beyond your Theoretical MHR during exercise.
2. Do i need to reduce the intensity of my work out.
Earlier I used Elliptical trainer at my home for 6-8 months some 4 years back. At that time also my heart rate reached around 185-190 during rigorous exercise but I didnt put attention on that until I came across some articles on net abt MHR. Even My GP at that time said its ok to go upto MHR but iam confused to whether continue or decrease the intensity.
3. In one of the article it quoted the XXXXXXX Aerobics one should do is 90-120 min per week. Im doing 30 min tread mill workout ( 5 min warm up at 3-4kmph, 2-3 min at 6.5kmph then 1.5 - 2min 10/12kmph and coming back to 6.5kmph) daily from last 1 week.
Sorry for asking such a long question but Im very much concerned abt losing the weight. (I want to come Back to 65-66 kgs)

Brief Answer:
You can do exercise if your body is comfortable after THR.

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
Thanks for asking your query.

There is a protocol called XXXXXXX protocol on which a test called tread mill test is done. The target heart rate to be achieved in that test is calculated by 85% of (220-heart rate) but if patient is asymptomatic he can keep on running after that also.
If you are comfortable you can run over 85% also on a simple trade mill.
2) If you are comfortable you need not to reduce the intensity of your exercise.

Take home message-
As far as your body is comfortable you can do exercises.
Don't google too much its all rubish.
However in case you cant stop yourself follow standard sites like NCBI or Mayo.

Thanks!

Good morning Doctor,
Im feeling pain ( not always but only tendor to touch) in left side ribs right below the arm pits some 5 inches down the arm pits. Its not always pain ful but pains only when i touch it. Yesterday itself i found it. Also yesterday i felt pain like sensation in my right nipple for a very brief moment of time. Im visiting Gym from last one month. Before also like last from 3-4 years i some times feel pain like sense in front part of the ribs both sides. My Physician attributed that to muscle spasms. But this one is new i suppose. Is it from the workouts im doing or anything else?
Also sir it starts slightly paining when inhaled deeply.
Thank you sir
Sorry for repeating additions but pain during inhalation was there only when riding a bike but normal times pain is not there even during deep respiration.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
From the history given by you it seems more likely to be a muscular pain or pain of ligaments.
Pain around the area of ribs can be costocondritic also.
Have you ever tried anti inflammatory medicines?
Please reply.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again Dear,

I would suggest tablet signoflam twice (this is not an over counter drug) daily for 2 days and tell me if pain responds to it or not.

Thanks.
