default
Posted on Tue, 7 Oct 2014
Question: I had XXXXXXX thyroid ablation two days ago and have worse hyperthyroid symptoms than before the treatment, e.g. leg pain, muscle aches, etc. Is this normal, if so, how long should I expect the symptoms to last?

Brief Answer:
Sensitive thyroid response - rare side effect

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. What you are experiencing rarely happens, but it does happen to some patients. As the thyroid gets sensitive (rarely) to the radioactive iodine treatment the hyperthyroid symptoms can temporarily worsen. But this usually lasts for 24-72 hours and not longer in majority of patients.

So we can expect your symptoms to gradually subside or at least become more suppressed/reduced within a day or two. If at all this sensitivity continues for longer than that, then you may have to report to your prescribing doctor. In the meantime, please try to drink plenty of water.

I hope you find my response helpful. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I would be more than happy to help.

Best wishes.
