It is normally secreted in the bile that the liver produces and then goes out in the urine and stool, giving the stool it's characteristic brown-yellow color. Hyperbilirubinemia can be caused by:
increased bilirubin production
liver cells not taking up bilirubin to process it
a problem with processing (conjugating) the bilirubin
a problem with the conjugated bilirubin being secreted into the bile
Obstruction of the gallbladder, hemolytic jaundice, and Gilbert's disease can cause hyperbilirubinemia. There is also a hyperbilirubinemia that can occur in newborns.
GI stands for gastrointestinal tract which includes the digestive organs and organs of elimination. The bile goes into the small intestines and then into the large intestines and into the stool.
