Posted on Wed, 8 Jun 2016
Question: I am a 68 yr. old female. I had a hysterectomy in 2000. I still have my ovaries. For the past 4 months I have awakened with the feeling of hot flashes that center in my abdomen and trunk. I recently had a clear colonoscopy. Is this a symptom of ovarian cancer?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello & thank you for submitting your question.

I understand your concern about these symptoms. The sensation of hot flashes in the abdomen and trunk could be due to a variety of causes, such as gastrointestinal, pulmonary, or even cardiac. Without a physical examination and possible adjunct testing (such as blood work, imaging studies and/or endoscopy of the upper gastrointestinal system) it is impossible to definitively determine what is causing your current symptoms. It is good that you are diligent about your preventative health screening and have had a recent colonoscopy. In general, ovarian cancer does not have one particular presentation and may range from being completely asymptomatic to causing extreme abdominal distention. At this point, I feel it would be premature to assume that your symptoms are a sign of cancer, however it would be very reasonable to see your physician for an examination and complete work up as well as to discuss your concerns. With a good physical examination, medical history and possible imaging studies, endoscopy, and blood tests, you and your physician will likely be closer to determining the cause of your symptoms and a management plan.

Yours in good health,
Dr Galamaga
