What Causes Hoarse Voice While Suffering From Cold And Cough?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 Feb 2015
Question: I have trouble talking. My voice can be described as hoarse or perhaps you can say I am losing my voice. I have had the cold recently. I have had the cough going on my 11th day and was given a prescription. Just recently when I wake up in the morning, I cough and could see minor blood in the mucus. My cough can be described as a wheezing cough however feels like I no longer have congestion.

Brief Answer:
Laryngitis...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for posting the query

Cough following an attack of upper respiratory infection is very common. The weakening of the voice is due to presence of swelling in the vocal cords, which is also termed as laryngitis. Congested vocal cords does induce cough.

Levaquin is an antibiotic containing levofloxacin without codeine. Cough with associated blood tinged sputum is due to breakage of small blood vessels during exertion.

Do not worry! With appropriate measures, this can be taken care of.

My suggestions to you are:
1. Drink plenty of warm water. Warm water re-hydrates the mucosa of the nose and the throat, thus reducing the irritation.
2. Do steam inhalation 3-4 times a day. Steam increases the blood supply to the vocal cords and thus reducing the congestion and cough.
3. Use saline nasal spray (available OTC), to keep the nasal mucosa moist (if you still have cold/nasal block)
4. Give voice rest.
5. Try taking mucolytic such as bromhexine or ambroxol if you are having productive cough.
6. Avoid coffee/smoking/fizzy drinks for few days.

Hope I have answered the query; I will be available for the follow-up queries.

Thank you for your time. I was mainly concerned cause of the minor blood found in the saliva/mucus when I would cough. I don't feel ill just annoyed with the cough and voice being so hoarse.

Brief Answer:
Blood tinged sputum is normal during a cough...

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Thanks for writing back

As I mentioned in my earlier response, during a bout of cough, the tiny, engorged blood vessels break off, which gets mixed with the mucus. Do not worry! This is perfectly normal and not a sign of any granulomatous diseases.

The measures I suggested in the earlier response can give you relief from the present problems. Finally, avoid forcible clearing of the throat.

I wish you good health and speedy recovery.
