Brief Answer:
Please give details of your father.

Detailed Answer:
Dear XXXXXXX

I understand your concern. I don't have details about your father.. Please right this again if possible.

For shivering, I would like to inform you that hypothalamus is a centre of heat regulations in our body. This acts like an air conditioner. You set the temperature and air conditioner maintains the room temperature.

Whenever any infectious agents enter in body they may themselves act as pyrogens or may cause release of endogenous pyrogens. These are substances that cause fever. These pyrogens elevate the set point of hypothalamus as raised body temperature is a defence mechanism against these microbes.

Now body start doing various things to raise body temperature. First such reaction is vasoconstriction(contraction of blood vessels) in the hand and feet. This causes shunting of blood from periphery to the internal organs essentially decreases heat loss from the skin, and person feels cold.

Second thing to do is shivering, which increases heat production from muscles.
These process of heat conservation continue until the temperature of blood bathing the hypothalamus matches the new thermostat setting. Once it is reached, hypothalamus maintains the temperature at febrile level by same mechanism.

When the hypothalamic set point is again reset downward (in response to decrease concentration of pyrogens or use of antipyretics), the process of heat loss by sweating and vasodilation(dilatation of blood vessels) continue until the body temperature matches the new hypothalamic set point.

Hope this will help you in understanding the basic mechanism of rise and fall of temperature and how shivering and sweating work to maintain that.

Sir, thanks for your detailed causes of shivering.
In case of my father, right now he is suffering from stone problem in bladder. He is having infection in his urine also. Three months back, the stone moved a little bit and he got a lot of blood in his urine. Whenever it moves slightly, he starts getting fever after severe shivering. Is this fever and shivering related to his stone and infection or it is related to something else. One thing I would like to mention is that he is a regular drunker and in the past also he used to get fevers after shivering.
