What Causes High WBC Count With High Platelet Count?

Posted on Sat, 24 May 2014
Question: Hi...I have been sick with different things for about a month now. First was pneumonia, then Bronchitis. I have been on Augmentin,Levaquin, and the high dose of the zpack during this time in combinations with Rocephrin shots. I don't have the coughing, fever, or nasal symptoms that I had once before but I am still severely fatigued and achy. I sleep all the time and my white blood cell count was 20,000 + when this all started and is again now. Also my platelets were high. Any suggestions on what this might be? I should also mention in the last year, my WBC count hasn't been below 14,000.

Brief Answer:
I need further details

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Hi , I am Dr Anshul Varshney , I have read your query in detail , I understand your concern.
High WBC count with high platelet count with no Symptoms of Infections points towards a Hematological Problem.

But usually if it is there abnormal cells (Atypical cells) are seen by the Pathologist.

High WBC Count of 20,000 indicates infection in general. It is actually not so high.
But i am more concerned that they are high without fever.
They can be high simply in any infection in the body, it is your immune response. But what is required is symptoms!

To reach to a better conclusion i need more details from you:

1. 1 month back, what problems you had? Did you have fever associated with Bronchitis or Pneumonia?? What was your WBC count at that time?

2. At present do you have any fever? If yes, please tell me how much?

3. Any Blood in sputum ever?

4. Did your WBC counts settled after the Antibiotic courses that you had? If yes, what was the reading?

5. Do you have any bony pains??

6. I actually need to co relate the relation between the illness phase and WBC Count. So, please tell me, what were your corresponding WBC counts.

7. A very important question i want to ask is what are your current symptoms? Why did you get investigated again?

8. Please attach all the reports and Chest Xray and Prescription of your doctor.

This is my personal opinion based on details available here. If you still have any query you may please ask me. Reply with the answers of the questions that i have asked, and preferably in point wise manner only.
Stay Healthy.

I did not have fever with the bronchitis or pneumonia. I had coughing and congestion with the bronchitis along with general achiness and fatigue. I had same symptoms with the pneumonia except my chest hurt and it was hard to breathe. During the times that I had symptoms, my WBC count was 20,000-22,000. When I feel normal, my WBC count is around 14,000 and has been that way for over a year. I have never had any blood in my sputum.I went back to the Dr. because I still feel drained...major fatigue and achiness. It is affecting my work because I have had to miss so much. It feels like I have the Flu with no symptoms except major fatigue and achiness. I do not have a fever and can't remember the last time I ran one and now my WBC count is back up to 20,000.

Brief Answer:
Get investigated

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
It simply means you have no clinical signs of infection.
And raised WBC count can be due to intermittent infections
Now the thing is that we should not take any risks
You should get investigated properly as you have either of the following:
1. Recurrent infections - Cause should be evaluated that why.
2. Asymptomatic Raised WBC- We need to find the cause. Also ruling out Hematological malignancies is important.

I advice you hollowing:
1. Hemogram with ESR
2. Absolute Eosinophil count.
3. Chest Xray
4. Liver and Kidney function test.
5. Ultrasound Abdomen.
6. General blood picture and Bone marrow.

I have asked you to get these investigations because you have not shared any of your report with me.
If you have any further query please ask me.
