What Causes Heavy Vaginal Bleeding After A C-section?

default
Posted on Wed, 16 Aug 2017
Question: Hi, I'm experiencing very heavy blood loss 7 weeks after a c section. It's like someone has turned on a tap, blood pouring out, lots of clots, unable to leave toilet & soaking a large night time pad every half hour. Doctor wouldn't see me but wrote me a prescription for transexamic acid assuming it was my period returning. How do I know that it is my period and not something more serious? Or that I'm not haemorrhaging after c section? Transexamic acid has slowed bleeding a bit & I'm producing less clots now. However still very concerned that bleeding may be something more sinister.

Brief Answer:
You need a proper clinical evaluation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for letting us know your health concern.

I have gone through your query and I think of the following possible causes in the current scenario.
1. A natural period returning for the first time after delivery. This tends to be heavy often and can be controlled by styptics.
2. A chemical pregnancy. However, pain is an associated feature in such a case.
3. Infection. This is also associated with odd-smell and discharge along with systemic symptoms.
4. Arteriovenous malformations, though rare. Coagulation defects can coexist with all of the above.

I would ask you to see the specialist for a proper clinical evaluation and plan further management. A sonogram of the pelvis preferably in the trans-vaginal route, is necessary. Blood counts, urinalysis and coagulation profile are useful.

Please take adequate rest, maintain proper hydration, avoid all stressful activity including intercourse and continue with the styptics.

Hope I have answered your query. Please feel free to contact for further information. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
