What Causes Hard Skin At The Place Of Incision Site For Umbilical Hernia?

default
Posted on Fri, 20 Feb 2015
Question: 5 years ago I had a small umbilical hernia repaired, right above the navel. The incision site is below the navel. Now, the upper portion of the belly button feels quite hard, much like the incision site. There is no pain or discomfort associated with this. I'm just concerned because I've never noticed this before. Perhaps it has been this way for quite some time. Could this be scar tissue that has developed where the doctor plugged the hernia 5 years ago?

Brief Answer:
Yes, this is thick fibrous scar tissue!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

After incisions, wound heal by producing new fibrous tissue which is harder and not as flexible as the normal tissue. This leads to it being harder. It is no problem and no reason to get worried about. Be relax and know this is entirely normal.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
