Posted on Thu, 18 Sep 2014
Question: Hey doc I got this wall of tissue mass that looks like a tombstone behind the arch where the tongue meets I can only see it when I stick my tongue way out. It's almost against the wall of the throat and under the tonsil. I've had this for a year with constant global sensation. I've been on antibiotics 3 times and it don't help also went to 2 different ENT doctors and they say it's lymphatic tissue. What can this be it drives me crazy scared of cancer. If u were to stick out the tongue and put your finger right behind the arch and at the base of the tongue that's where the mass is u can feel the bulge of tissue it almost hides against the wall of the throat. Please help

Brief Answer:
not to worry

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir and welcome to healthcaremagic,
I believe you have seen your lingual tonsils. They are located at the junction of the tonsils and the tongue. They are lymphoid aggregates and are present in everyone. Their size can wary a lot and sometimes they can be quite large and unsightly. They do not cause any symptoms if they are not infected.

Do not worry. It is not cancer.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi.

Brief Answer:
part of tonsil

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir,
Sorry for the delay in response.

The tombstone like thing is part of the tonsil only. The lymphoid aggregates of the tonsil is very irregular and is thrown into convolutions on the surface.

In the pics that you uploaded I cannot see any abnormality. All the structures are normal and you have nothing to worry about.

Regards,
Dr Rajkishori Godhi.
