Posted on Mon, 20 Oct 2014
Question: Hi Doctor,
This Question related to my kids.
He is just 3months old and his stool color is in green for last 1.5 months. We have recently done with the stool culture and the finding was "proteus species" present and doctor given antibiotic (OFLOXACIN drop) for five days and course is completed and we are yet to go for another stool culture. but his stool color is not changed and still its light greenish color. His intake is good and passing motion once in every day. Since we are having twins (boy & girl) breast milk is not enough for both the kids and giving bottle feed (nan pro-1) for both of them. While doing stool culture we have done for girl kid as well and the finding was "Ecoli" present and the same antibiotic was provided to her as well. her stool color also light greenish come yellow color.
Requesting your advice for the same and need to know the reason for the green color stool.

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Nan pro is the reason for green stools

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

I have read your query. I am sorry about both your babies being infected.

Ofloxacin is the right treatment for both of them.

The reason or cause for the green colour stool is the bottle feed along with the proteus infection.

The varying colour of the stool is because of changing feeds between breast milk and bottle feeds. When the babies are given mother's milk, the stools are yellow in colour. When you feed the babies with bottle feeds, the stool colour changes to grey or greenish. Thirdly, infection is the serious cause of change in stool colour to Greenish colour.

Please repeat Stool test for both the babies after the course of Ofloxacin.

Please make sure that complete sterilization is maintained for preparing and feeding baby foods.

Wish your babies, a speedy recovery.

Regards,
