What Causes Frequent Urination With Weak Urine Stream After A Cervical Discectomy?

default
Posted on Wed, 21 Sep 2016
Question: I am a 68 yo male with a history of kidney stones which haven't been an issue for the past couple of years. I had a UTI last week & was prescribed SMZ TMP DS. I took half of the prescription before being admitted for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion surgery, or ACDF yesterday. I was discharged this morning. Last night and up to this point in time today, I have the urge to urinate every 5 to 10 minutes and do so with minimal results. Weak stream. start and go, and very little urine. When I mentioned it to the RN who looked in the rust colored urine,,,,,,,she said I was dehydrated. As a point off reference, I have had to stop typing this and visit the restroom three times.

Brief Answer:
Most likely to be due to the UTI only

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your query, based on the facts that you have posted it appears that you have frequency for urination and urgency for urination after you were operated for Cervical Discectomy .

I shall be happy if you can post me few more details to help me in making comments on your problem.

1) Were you catheterized during surgery?

The symptoms that you have are most likely to be due to UTI or Urethritis resulting from catheterization .

Please get your routine urine test and urine culture done to find out the organisms causing this infection and antibiotics to which they are sensitive to.

Please take broad spectrum antibiotics like CEFIXIME 200 mg twice daily along with urinary antiseptic like Nitrofurantoin 100 mg twice daily and urine alkalizer like Syp Potassium Citrate thrice daily. Later on switch on to appropriate antibiotics as per culture report.

Taking Darifenacin once daily or Oxybutinine twice daily will help to reduce urgency for urination .

Please get the prescription of medicines from your family Physician.

Ensure to drink more water. To keep your urine diluted as well as to help controlling dysuria (painful micturition, if any).

Hope I have answered your query ,please feel free to ask if you have more questions , I shall be happy to help you .

Thanks and Regards.
