Question: Hi Doctor

On march 16th I had protected sex but prior to that (an hour) I had shaved my genital areas.. I did get a small cut then but during sex there was no bleeding or anything. i.e it was not open. About 2 weeks back I got fever and swollen lymphs in neck (2 swollen glands) and I got really worried. I also got swollen gums.
P.S : I dont remember getting any vaginal secretions on my areas but the fever freaks me out. Please tell if I have any risk.

Thanks
doctor

Brief Answer:
Least possibility of HIV; RNA PCR to confirm same

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for posting your query to the forum.

I can understand your concern for fever and swollen lymph nodes and its correlation to any sexually transmitted infection (in particular to HIV).

After reading your query with diligence and analyzing the complete situation the risk of HIV is almost negligible or nil. You might be knowing that HIV can not spread by body to body contact and for the best protection from HIV, condoms are the safest method. As I can get there was no any bleeding or any secretions during the sexual act so the possibility is on rarest of side.

For the fever and swollen glands- there are innumerable causes of fever in this world. HIV is not the only cause for the same. Swollen lymph nodes are just a perception and is always to be checked out with a medical experts. I quite often see young men like you coming with complaints of swollen lymph nodes but in actuality the structures are either muscles or deeper tissue. So accordingly your perception of swollen lymph nodes is to be properly checked out.

In your kind of cases as you may require a definite proof of clear status so in my patients I suggest to go for the simple "Tridot test" and most advanced test- "RNA PCR". It is almost 7 weeks since the incidence so both the test can be performed but for the best of peace of mind you can go for RNA PCR. In my view it would be negative and will provide complete relaxation from the point of any sexually transmitted infection an in particular to HIV.

I hope all these informations will help you. I will be glad to answer any further of your queries.

Hi doctor

Thanks for the prompt answer.. I had myself checked from an internal medicine doctor and he confirmed that it was swollen lymph . Also there were only 2 or 3 swollen glands in neck only nowhere else..

I again stress on the fact that there was no visible vaginal secretions though I fear that the closed cut might have rubbed to the vagina during the act of sex.

Brief Answer:
Go for RNA PCR

Detailed Answer:
Hello young man,

Thanks for your swift reply.

Considering your fact of swollen lymph nodes, I still say that there are least of chances of HIV infection.

As per your query, you shaved 1 hour before the sex and the cut was produced at that time. Now, 1 hour of period is sufficient period when a good clot is formed and there is no oozing is present. SO at the time of intercourse even if some fluid is in contact then there are least of chance to get entered into body.

For the swollen glands as I said previously there are so many reasons for fever and therefore are so many causes of lymph node enlargement according to fever. So do not get anxious for the same.

I again suggest you to go for RNA PCR which is the best test for the present situation. As I said it would be negative in my clinical sense and therefore will relieve all your anxiety.

Hope the informations will relax you, if you have any further query I will be happy to help.

Wish you good health
