What Causes Feeling Of Electrical Impulses Above The Left Ear?

default
Posted on Mon, 4 Jul 2016
Question: Recently (over the past month) I have been experiencing symptoms similar to an electrical impulse above and the rear of my left ear. It appears and abates rapidly and last approximately 1 second and not severe but noticeable and unpleasant. I am S/P MI w/bypass surgery (2005) and S/P Radical Esophagectomy (2011) and severe aspiration during a routine cardiac ablation (2015) which culminated in aspiration pneumonia and a 6-day coma. I am currently diagnosed with CHF with an ejection fraction of 25-28 and on Xerelto as one of my prescribed medications. Could this symptom be associated with any of the above? I am a 71yr Caucasion Male, weight 170lbs and inspire of the above, very active and in, otherwise, good health. I am retired and trained as a Clinical Psychologist.

Brief Answer:
Read below.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

Reading at your other previous and current diagnoses though I do not think there is any association between any of those issue and this current complaint, none of those conditions do manifest or complicate with that symptom.

As for what could it be, one possibility could be occipital neuralgia, irritation of the occipital nerve which supplies that area. That irritation could be due to compression in the upper levels of the neck where it exits the spine, commonly due to arthritic changes.
One other possibilty could also be mastoiditis, an infection of the mastoid bone air cells behind the ear, commonly associated with ear infections.

I remain at your disposal for other questions.
