What Causes Fast Heart Beat And Chest Pain?

Posted on Mon, 21 Apr 2014
Question: I took the wrong dose of neurtriptyline - it was the wrong mg capsules which made it a lethal dose. I'm having heart problems ever since I did it last week. My heart races. My heart pounds out of my chest! My BP was 280/140 In ambulance ! Went to ER n to cardiologist. Gave me med to slow it down - starts with a " m 25mg". It doesn't work! Should I goto the ER again tonight or wait for appointment Monday? Can I die suddenly from this now? Is there a fix to ODing on a TCA anti depressant?

Brief Answer: need more details Detailed Answer: Hello, I am sorry; I see that your query is unanswered for quite some time now. I am a medical doctor, an associate in Department of Cardiology, working with an experienced cardiologist. I answer on his behalf. Your query is being posted 2 days ago. How are you feeling now? I would like to know your current health status to be able to guide you better. Did you go to the ER or waiting on the appointment? To answer your query specifically - Can I die suddenly from this now? I am sorry; if some one has a high heart rate along with a BP of 280/140, there are high chances of death. Is there a fix to ODing on a TCA anti depressant? Yes, a gastric lavage has to be performed immediately, followed by activated charcoal. Cardiac monitoring should be initiated at the earliest and the signs be managed accordingly. Let me know as to how you feel now, to be able to guide you better. Regards,

Thanks for your answer.. Was in er 3Xs already. The neutriptyline has been taken over a week ago and I went to hospital following morning after heart was beating so hard it felt as if it was coming out of my chest. They said I accidentally took lethal dose. Took wrong bottle w diff mg pills accidentally! Worst feeling n mistake that's still giving me problems. Saw outside cardiologist n put me on metropiphol which has my rate now at 60 and bp usually at 150/90. Was always 120/80 so new felt feeling with higher bp. Having many tests done n hopefully we can reverse the damage. Kidneys were OK! Can't take migraine medicine sumavel cause they said risk for stroke now. Sucks cause only migraine med that ever worked! Hopefully they can find a new med for that. Just want problems to be normal again! Hate the pain n feelings I have. Thanks for follow up. Really scared with new condition!

Brief Answer: You have been prescribed the right drug Detailed Answer: Hello, I am glad to hear from you again. You have been prescribed the right drug - I assume it is Metoprolol rather than metropiphol. Metoprolol will definitely help you keep the heart rate under normal, and also the BP. I am sorry for you cannot take the migraine medicine now but please wait until your heart settles down. Once this is done, you can resume taking sumavel. All of your problems would settle down soon. Be rest assured about it. Take care!
