What Causes Excessive Weight Gain And Constant Sleepiness?

Posted on Mon, 15 May 2017
Question: I am terrified for my 22yo daughter. She has a thyroid issue. She has always been very thin and then recently gained about 30 pounds. She has a profound amount of bright red stretch marks all up and down her thighs and rear end. They are growing and getting worse each day. She also is having constant nose bleeds that are getting worse. In addition she has what some doctors call akinic karatosis (sp?) or dermatitis or something with red dots down both arms that is getting worse by the day. Endocrynologist gave her a cream for her thighs and said "see you in one year". WHAT? She sleeps constantly. She is graduating from college and I'm afraid she won't be able to get a job and work. Help?

Brief Answer:
It can be hypothyroidism.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
I have gone through your question.

Weight gain and constant sleepiness can be signs of an underactive thyroid gland or also called hypothyroidism.

About the bright red stretch marks of your daughter,in my opinion they can be attributed to sudden change in her weight.

Anyway, don't worry!Stretch marks aren’t dangerous, and they often disappear over time.

If your daughter was my patioen ,i will ask to do the thyroid function tests TSH ,freeT3 and freeT4 and the cortisole measurement because some adrenal gland disorders can cause stretch marks by increasing the amount of cortisone in your body.(the results of these test are important to understand your daughter's actual thyroid or adrenal gland condition and if she need any treatement.)

My advice for your daughter:Moisturizing your skin may help to relieve the itchiness of stretch marks(if she has itching problems. Applying self-tanning lotion to your stretch marks is a temporary way to minimize the difference in color between your normal skin and your stretch marks.

Waiting your response.
Best regards.

What do you think of her bloody nose issue? No one should get 6 per day, should they? She is having her cortisol level checked. We don't have the results yet. Also, what about the bumps on her arms? Medication or gluten reaction? They did just change her birth control pill. Thoughts on how to help cure that?

Brief Answer:
It is necessary to consult an ENT specilaist and a dermatologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again

The most common causes of nosebleeds are drying of the nasal membranes and nose picking (digital trauma), which can be prevented with proper lubrication of the nasal passages and not picking the nose.

Anyway i suggets to talk with an ENT specialist for the right diagnose and treatement of her bloody nose issue.

The bumps on her arms can not be diagnosed without a physical exam.
I need a clear photograph in natural light,of these bumps on her arms,so i can understand better this condition.

You didn't mention, why the doctors prescribed contraceptive to your daughter.

Hope this information is helpful.
Take care.
