What Causes Elevation Of Liver Enzymes?

default
Posted on Tue, 29 Apr 2014
Question: I have been supplementing with high levels of hgh (5 IU's a day) and my liver tests came back as my AST and ALT a few points above normal but my Alkaline Phosphate levels being 30 points over. The high end of normal was 120 through my lab and I came back 150. Is there any concern here or is this from taking the HGH?

Brief Answer: hi and welcome to hcm Detailed Answer: Thanks for the query. Elevation of liver enzymes is possible effect of hgh and it can be considered in you case, but this is still not significant liver damage and you should not be worried. All you need is to repeat lfts in 2 weeks.it there is worsening then you should do liver ultrasound and stop hgh. If there would be high lfts despite stopping hgh, then you need to rule out biliary stones, viral hepatitis and other liver diseases. In every case, avoid alcool, fats, fried fiid and eat more fruit and vegetables.also regulate your blood sugar and blood lipids if neccesary. Wish you good health. Regards

Ok, I did not have any liver issues prior to taking HGH. My endo said 3 out of the 4 values were high (AST, ALT) but that the Alkaline Phosphatase was 30 points higher so he was a little concerned. I read somewhere that high Alkaline Phosphatase could be a sign of leukemia and I have also read is some rare instances that HGH supplementation can cause Leukemia. Is there anything to this or need to be concerned from a Leukemia standpoint?

Brief Answer: Hi Detailed Answer: No, leukemia is the last hing to think of. It is true that ALP may be elevated in leukemias and other blood disorders but if before high ALPs,leukemia would show other abnormal blood findings much earlier. ALP may be higher in many other conditions and most of are benign. it can also be seen in smokers. In many cases there is just temporary elevation and it dont require treatment. if there is persistent high alp then you should rule out liver and bones disorders first, but if you dont have any symptoms then you should just have frequent LFT check ups and do liver ultrasound.
