What Causes Elevated Liver Enzyme Levels Post Withdrawal From Lamisil?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Jun 2016
Question: I am a 40 year old male. I was prescribed Lamosil for toenail fungus. I developed severe itching and was told by the podiatrist to stop the medication which I had taken for 3 and a half weeks.
After 3 days of not taking the medication, I had a liver panel done and the ALT was 76. What now?
Will my liver recover? I have no evidence of jaundice or abdominal pain. I did not have a PCP but have found one and have an appointment on May 12.

Brief Answer:
Mild liver elevations

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

You are concerned that the lamisil elevated your liver enzymes and if you can recover from the elevation. First there are numerous things thata can cause elevation in liver enzymes from high cholesterol, high blood sugars, use of alcohol or tylenol or other medications. In your case the elevation is very small. When we see liver damage from a medication or hepatitis the liver enzymes are in the hundreds to thousands. Yours is barely above normal. If you stop the medication avoid alcohol and lose weight if you are overweight will reduce your ALT easily.

At this point I would not be at all overly concerned about your ALT. Ask your doctor t repeat the ALT in 1-2 months and see is there is any change.

In summary
1. ALT is only minimal elevation and not a sign of real significant liver damage
2. ALT to be concerned would be in the hundreds or thousands
3. Other causes of elevated ALT, Overweight, diabetes or high sugars, high cholesterol, alcohol or tylenol and other medications
4. loses weight and avoid medications if possible
5. Repeat ALT in 1-2 months
