What Causes Eczema On The Penis Glans Post Treatment For Prostatitis?

default
Posted on Sat, 30 Jul 2016
Question: Hello,
I have been treating eczema on the glans of my penis for approx. 6 weeks now.

I was diagnosed by a dermatologist and prescribed Protopic which i have been using for that 6 week period and continue to use as i was told to use until it had cleared.

The condition is improving, but there is still redness and scaly skin.

The condition of eczema coincided with my treatment of prostatitis with Septra. After about 5 days of antibiotics the condition got very bad. This was at least 3 months ago.

I have a few questions.
1. Could this have actually been a fixed drug eruption?
2. Could a fixed drug eruption be mistaken for eczema?
3. What is the treatment for fixed drug eruption and how long would it typically take to clear up?
4. If this was actually a FDE would the Protopic be used in the treatment?

Brief Answer:
FDE is also a possibility

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Welcome to Healthcaremagic.com. I have read your query. I understand your concern.
If the rash over glans appeared within 7-10 days of taking medications, then possibility of Fixed drug eruption canmot be ignored. For FDE, in prefer to advise application of cream containing Steroid and antibiotic like Futop B cream for 7-14 days. Protopic is not the choice treatment of FDE. However the pigmentation may take longer time to get resolved. It usually responds to steroid treatment within 2 weeks.
As per symptoms, redness with scaling, I would like to rule out Fungal infection too. For that clinical examination is most important. In doubtful cases, KOH preparation is done to look for fungal elements.
You may discuss all this with your treating doctor.
I hope it helps.
Take care

Thank you very much for getting back to me.

The course of antibiotic was completed 3 months ago. I started noticing they symptoms of a hard, red, scaly rash on my glans around 5-7 days after starting the course.

My doctors believed that it was a fungal/yeast and treated as such. When those symptoms did not clear i was sent to a dermatologist who diagnosed as eczema. That was 6 weeka ago and i was put on protopic.

The rash is clearing, but very slowly.

If this was indeed a FDE would the symptoms of the rash persisted for 3 months?

I have another appointment with my dermatologist in two weeks. Assuming i stay with protopic, regardless of whether it is eczema or FDE this will clear eventually with the use of protopic, correct?

Is there anything i can be doing in addition to treating with protopic to assist in the healing regardless of whether this is eczema or FDE?

Brief Answer:
continue proptopic

Detailed Answer:
Its my pleasure to help you here. If your Dermatologist has examined you personally and diagnosed it as Eczema then it should be considered as the first most possible diagnosis. Anyways Proptopic would help in both eczema and FDE.
Yes without treatment, FDE may persist for long.
Response may be slower with Proptopic but
it can be continued safely for longer duration.
I would advise you to visit your Dermatologist on appointed time for clinical examination. Till then you may continue to apply the ointment.
I hope it helps.
Take care.
