Question: Hi I'm 66 years old & have had some trouble breathing, not getting enough oxygen. I have very little umph anymore & take short naps most everyday. I'm 6ft & weigh 285lbs. used to be very athletic but developed periperal neuropathy years ago. I'm idiopathic & non diabetic. can't walk far distances without sitting down & can't stand on my feet very long. Have been taking Lyrica 150mg 4 x a day & tramadole 50mg 3 x a day. What are the early signs of Congested Heart failure? Thanks, Phil.

Brief Answer:
Shortness of breath

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for contacting HCM with your health care concerns

I am sorry that you are having problems with shortness of breath. Your shortness of breath could be related to congestive heart failure. The usual accompanying signs of heart failure are shortness of breath when laying flat. You would also get shortness in the middle of the night requiring to wake and sit up. There would also be swelling of the feet. Sometimes there is chest pain but not always

Other causes of shortness of breath include lung problems from COPD or emphysema. If you were a prior smoker then this would be the most likely cause of the shortness of breath

A chest x ray can tell if you have this and may also show an enlarged heart if you have congestive heart failure

I would recommend that you go back to your provider and tell him your symptoms and proceed with a proper work up because there is a real long list for causes of shortness of breath that needs to be checked. Once the cause is determined then you can receive appropriate therapy.

I hope I answered your question. Please contact us again if you hav any additional questions
