What Causes Dizziness After Eating Shellfish?

default
Posted on Thu, 11 Dec 2014
Question: I had a reaction to shellfish 3 days ago - I got really nauseous and dizzy - and that was the first time it happened, although I never eat shellfish to begin with. I then worked out this morning and got dizzy - that sometimes happens when my asthma acts up during exercise but it gets better with my inhaler. I still feel a little dizzy and unwell a few hours later. Do I just need rest or is this something to be concerned about?

Brief Answer:
evaluation with ent examination and blood tests.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any associated abdominal pain or diarrhea ?
Is your dizziness associated with ear pain or head-ache ?

Kindly get back to me with details.

As per your clinical details, shellfish poisoning causing dizziness is less likely for 3 days. No symptoms suggestive of poisoning (no abdominal pain, diarrhea nor itching). You need to evaluate for other causes of dizziness.

I suggest you to consult ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, otoscopy and vestibular tests (inner ear evaluation), hypotension (BP monitoring), if necessary blood tests (electrolytes).

I also advise to take rest, stop doing work-outs, till you get evaluated.

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:Investigations like, HB%, ELECTROLYTES, GRBS are needed

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

As such, there are several causes for episodic dizziness.(Snail fish poisoning, middle ear infection excluded). you need to evaluate with an ENT surgeon and discuss with other possible causes like nutritional deficiencies- hb%, fluctuation in electrolytes and blood sugar.

Kindly go ahead.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
