Question: I have had petite mal seizures since I was 19 years old. I have been taking valproic acid (250 mg) 4 tablets each day. I would like to know why after having a bowel movement, I sometimes feel light-headed?? I am asking you this question because I have been living in XXXXXXX Lake for 1 year now, and do not have a doctor yet. I am allergic to Penicillin and Sulfa

Brief Answer:
Due to alteration of your brain blood flow.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome and thanks for your query.
Your symptom is not related to your petit mal seizure disorder.
Light headedness or dizziness is often related to the change of blood flow to certain areas of the brain. After a bowel movement there is a vacuum like effect in the abdomen which is made up by pooling of blood in the abdomen so that there is a decrease of blood for the general circulation. This along with you changing your posture from sitting to standing further decreases the blood flow by effects of gravity. Such changes rarely produce any effect when you are young and the vascular system adjusts by its compliance. But as one grows in age, the blood vessels become less compliant and more rigid, leading to the effects of decreased blood flow.
To counter this, you should sit for a few minutes after having a bowel movement, get up slowly holding on to some thing and remain standing for a minute or so before walking out.
Do get back to me if you have more queries.
Take care,
